2008-2009 CHINESE PROFESSIONAL CLUB SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Mission Provide merit scholarships and financial assistance to students of Chinese descent in
the Houston metropolitan area who plan to enroll in accredited universities in the United
States. Governing Body The CPC Scholarship Fund Inc. is governed by a board of 11 trustees in strict
accordance with the by-laws of the corporation. As the term of each trustee is 11 years,
there is 1 trustee retiring each year, who is automatically replaced by the newly elected
president of the Chinese Professional Club. This process fosters continuity and stability,
thus enabling each trustee to operate in an equitable, smooth, and perpetual manner. The
board determines the investment mechanism of the fund and the total amount of scholarships
to be awarded each year. Board meetings are held twice a year with each trustee donating
their time without any monetary compensation. Award Recipient Selection Process A scholarship committee consisting of 7-9 members of the Chinese Professional Club is
responsible for determining the number of scholarships to be awarded each year and
selecting their recipients. Scholarship information is publicized through area high
schools. churches, and newspapers. All students of Chinese descent who reside in the
Houston metropolitan area and plan to attend accredited universities in the United States
are eligible to apply. Selection of scholarship recipients is based on academic records,
extracurricular activities, an essay on a pre-selected topic, and an interview with the
scholarship committee. Funding Mechanism All scholarships and financial aids are drawn from interests earned from the
Scholarship Trust Fund, which is invested in conservative financial instruments such as
treasury bills and bank CD's. Fund raising activities are planned periodically to solicit
donations to the Fund from both corporate and individual sponsors. The main fund raising
event each year is the Chinese New Year Scholarship Ball, at which time the
recipients
for the scholarship and financial aid awards were also recognized.
